The Country Wife - William Wycherley
Dominique Ukrainec Grade 9.
Theme: I believe the theme is a love/hate story. I mean there is 'love' with Horners affairs, but that's only temerary. And then the hate comes when Jack figures out Horner likes his wife.
Auther: William Wycherley
Time Period: 1640 - 1716 (Written in 1675)
Plot: Starting with the introductery with how Horner is a cuckolded husband, it moves on to how Jack doesn't want that to happen, so he gets married to a girl he doesn't fully care for. Then the affairs with Horner come into play, reveiling the climax.
The main plot is basicly that you can't restrain someone when they really want something. Including sex. If your not happy in a marrage, an affair is so not the right way to fix it, but it is one of the most populair.
Mr.Horner (Horner reffered to by the c horns worn by a cuckolded husband) is a man with terrible reputation; seducing woman, pretending he was made an impotent person. He -thinking he could get away with it - instructed his quack docter to spread news of his misfortune around the town. Jack Pinchwife - a friend of Horners - cuckolded that he marries a girl named Marjorie - a young woman from the country whom Jack believes does not know enough about the fashion life to take on a husband or family. Because of this he does not tell anyone he has married. But one day he is bringing his wife to a play and the town has directed their full attention towards them, particularly Horner. Afterward Marjorie -being a country girl- becomes obsessed with the town pleasures. Finaly, after some time of asking, Pinchwife agrees to take his wife to another play, but this time she diquises as a man. But Mr.Horner reconizes the diquise and makes adresses to Mrs.Pinchwife, who is dressed as her brother, insisting his kisses are for the supposedly absent Marjorie. Later, Jack makes his wife write a rejection letter for Horner. Little does he know at the last moment she switches the rejection letter with a love letter.
At the end of the play, Horners affair with Marjorie, and many other woman, nearly come to a head, but the docter comes back to town and conferms Horners impotence, and all returns to normal.[/b]
