Dear Editor,
I just wanted to let you know, that your opinion on slavery is quite strong, and that I agree.
Slavery is wrong, and completely unnecessary. What happened to the time when everyone was equal, and lived peacefully? Was there ever one? How are we to know when all we've been taught is to treat coloured people like our own personal animals?
You spoke of a single black girl, who was accused of stealing, in front of a town of people. How they watched and laughed as she was forced back to the place she ran from, only to endure worse then when she had ran. That there, their reaction, shows how disgraceful we really are. How rude, and disgusting. If we are able to laugh and stand by as a poor little girl is sent back to her death, then there is something wrong with us.
In the late 1700's, the end of slavery was once brewing. So we had thought. People talked of taking action. Of Finlay ending the terror. It is now 1808. Do you see any change here? Yes, people talked. People are always talking, but when are we final going to stop talking and do something? When are we, the people who say we are against using Africans as our slaves, yet we sit and laugh as they are beaten, going to stop this?
We are scared of change. Scared to go against the way it's always been. But even though we may not know it first hand, I cannot believe this is the way it has always been. I believe there has to have been a point where all people were free to be as they wish, live free. I haven't a clue what changed it and created this, but I can grantee this is not how it has always been. We are taught in school to hate the people with colour in there skin. To be disgusted by them. They are taught by there family's to fear us, and know their place below us. The people with now colour. The white people. Their Masters. It's completely horrifying.
If people would just stop the idiotic talking, and pretending, and just stop being scared to change the way it's always been, then maybe we'd have a chance at ending the madness, and bring equality to our land. But if you look around at the people now, tell me..do you see any sort of chance in that happening? Any change in their face? Any emotion while the Africans are beat? No. You see amusement don't you? Their amusement at the fact that their slaves are being beaten for doing something slightly wrong. But, that's how it's always been. Why change it right?
Yours truly,
Dominique.
